[40:10] (SPEAKING ETHIOPIAN)
[40:11] P-Police?
[40:13] (SPEAKING ETHIOPIAN)
[40:15] Do you speak English?
[40:24] Nice to see you both again.
[40:27] Have a seat.
[40:30] Sorry we’re late.
[40:31] I thought we were meeting at Mr. Getman’s office.
[40:33] This is my office.
[40:36] Hmm. Well, if this is about filing suit
[40:39] to recover court costs…
[40:41] BULL: It isn’t.
[40:42] We wanted to meet with you face-to-face
[40:44] to give you a heads-up about something.
[40:46] You will be receiving a call shortly
[40:48] from the State Department with some flight information.
[40:52] Flight information?
[40:53] For whom?
[40:57] Oh, Alex? You mean, he’s…?
[40:59] He’s coming back.
[41:00] H-How? How did you…?
[41:02] I didn’t. He did.
[41:04] I’ll explain everything, but I need you to listen.
[41:07] I’m listening.
[41:08] Your son is on his way home.
[41:11] And his father is awaiting trial in Ethiopia.
[41:15] Okay.
[41:16] You know how much it hurt you
[41:18] to be away from your son, that’s how much it hurt his father
[41:20] for the past five years.
[41:21] You can make this right.
[41:23] Let Abel come to the States. Don’t press charges.
[41:27] Let him be a part of Alexander’s life in some way.
[41:31] GETMAN: A-And you know what? Here’s another thought.
[41:34] Maybe consider starting a foundation.
[41:36] You’re good at getting the media’s attention.
[41:38] And it might be nice to focus on something
[41:40] other than yourself for a change.
[41:43] Excuse me?
[41:44] Ignore the presentation, focus on the message.
[41:46] It’s why he works in the outer boroughs.
[41:49] Yeah. Did I say something wrong?
[41:51] Though this has been a difficult experience
[41:53] for all of us,
[41:54] my eyes have been opened to both the profound benefits
[41:59] and potential pitfalls to international adoption.
[42:02] That is why it is the mission of the Bekele Foundation
[42:05] to make sure that every child brought to America
[42:08] is done so ethically and with transparency.
[42:11] And now,
[42:13] there’s someone very special I would like to thank.
[42:16] Dr. Jason Bull.
[42:18] (APPLAUSE) Because of you,
[42:21] my son has both a mother and a father.
[42:23] Because of you, we are all a family.
[42:26] And I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
[42:35] Don’t you find this to be a bit hypocritical?
[42:37] – She was suing us three weeks ago. – I guess.
[42:40] I like her hair.
[42:41] I love her clothes.
[42:43] Notwithstanding the legal thing,
[42:45] I think she’s a really nice person.
[42:48] (“FAME” BY DAVID BOWIE PLAYING)
